The Economy:
Private enterprise, not government, is the key to reigniting our economy. We live in a capitalistic society, a nation in which small businesses and entrepreneurs have led to amazing periods of growth and prosperity. To rejuvenate our economy, we must get government out and once again let the American spirit of free enterprise lead the charge.

Taxes/State Budget:
“The problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that government spends too much.” – Ronald Reagan

Maryland is currently ranked as having the 4th Highest Tax Burden in the nation when it comes to taxing its citizens. Enough is enough.

Among other mistakes, in 2007 the legislature jammed through the largest tax increase in Maryland history. Raising the sales tax from 5% to 6% (a 20% increase) has led to an actual drop in revenue as many drive to other states to make purchases more cheaply than they can here at home. As the lead sponsor of legislation returning the sales tax back to 5%, I will further the fight to lower this – and all – taxes – should I be elected to the Maryland Senate.
As for the budget, I would scrutinize every agency and program – including the so-called sacred cows – for areas to be cut. There can be no unquestioned “entitlements” when people are losing their jobs and homes. There can be no “sacred cows.” Again, every agency and program must be closely scrutinized.

Agriculture/Land Preservation:
Farming and Land Preservation are two of the reasons I first sought public office in 2002. I have said on many occasions that successful farming – and not government fiat – makes for the best and truest means of land preservation. If a farmer can make a decent living farming, he won’t sell the land. For these reasons, since they go hand in hand, I will continue to fight for both farming and land preservation. I will also continue to support programs such as MALF and Rural Legacy, pending potential budget cuts.

The Treatment of Maryland’s Military Personnel:
As a member of the Maryland Air National Guard, I understand now more than ever the need to ensure all of Maryland’s military personnel are treated as deserving the status of heroes and warriors. From job protection, credit protection, tax and health benefits when applicable and possible, I will stand with those who have stood up for all of us.
